Kubist Design began as a creative outlet for Gina in 2017, at first painting on recycled and repurposed glass vessels. “I was finding it harder to paint with a young one in tow. Paint would dry while I was occupied and I just wasn’t finding it possible to do alongside my bub without curious fingers prodding paint. I pretty quickly moved from painting with acrylics on the s to making things with polymer clay. There’s something so therapeutic with it, it’s almost a stress ball effect, except at the end, you have made something with purpose and function.
The mess created is fairly minimal compared with painting, which suits me at this stage of life. I’m looking forward to getting messy again one day!” The Air Planters you see in The Plant Lounge were borne of curiosity for Tillandsia and to fill a desire for uniquely shaped botanical wall planters for air plants. “I began collecting Tillandsia for my home in 2017 and kept wondering how I could showcase them without occupying cabinet top or shelf space. It was very trial and error at first. Size and scale is important when dealing with polymer clay, so the planters needed to have a certain thickness and shape to prevent them from breaking from a fall.
The mini planters you see are the most durable and would be highly unlikely to break from falling. This makes them perfect for hanging at height.” Gina is currently working on designs for housing multiple plants in one, the ‘Ripple’ and ‘Wave’, both due to be released in January 2020.
Please note: Feel free to BYO drinks, we will provide nibbles (let us know if you have food intolerance).
